01
Takeaway
Define What “Great” Looks Like
Before interviewing anyone, agree on the specific qualities your ideal Product candidate should possess. A shared scorecard keeps interviews focused and decisions consistent.
02
Takeaway
Let Candidates Assess Themselves
Break the PM role into key areas and ask candidates to rate their own experience. Their answers and the examples behind them can reveal both their capabilities and self-awareness.
03
Takeaway
Design the Hiring Process Like a Product
Define the process upfront, tell candidates exactly what to expect, and stick to it. A messy hiring experience says as much about your company as the candidate’s performance says about them.
04
Takeaway
Look for Problem-Led Thinking
Don’t judge candidates by whether they reach the “right” answer. Look at how they understand the problem, examine users and data, identify gaps, and only then move toward solutions.
05
Takeaway
Don’t Hire People Just Because You Like Them
Similarity can easily be mistaken for fit. Look for people who challenge you, complement the team’s existing strengths, and bring perspectives and capabilities you don’t already have.
06
Takeaway
Remember: They’re Interviewing You Too
An interview is a two-way evaluation. While you assess the candidate’s professional, personal, and team fit, they’re deciding whether your team and company deserve their talent.

Planning is the hallmark of a good Product Manager. To achieve the end result, we know how to break a goal down into micro steps.
Hence, if you are a hiring manager and your hiring process is not well defined from the beginning, that’s a red flag for any candidate.
We should bring our craft to every aspect of our work.
Tell the candidate what to expect from start to finish and stick to that. Do not add the steps “you forgot to mention.” Do not add extra people to meet them ad-hoc.
Execute the hiring process as you’d expect them to execute a product launch. Anything else is not OK.
