01
Takeaway
Make Your Goals a Priority
Stakeholder conflict often isn't personal at all. You may simply be pursuing different goals. Communicate not only what you're trying to achieve, but why it matters, and actively create alignment around shared goals.
02
Takeaway
Read Between the Lines
Don't pretend office politics don't exist. Understand both the formal and informal networks influencing decisions, identify supporters and detractors, and account for those dynamics when planning how to move your product forward.
03
Takeaway
Prioritize Shared Motivation Over Individual Talent
A collection of talented individuals doesn't automatically create an effective team. Bring conversations back to clear company goals, customer value, evidence, and meaningful metrics so people have something larger than their individual agendas to align around.
04
Takeaway
Map Interests, Not Positions
When someone stubbornly opposes an initiative, don't get trapped arguing about what they're demanding. Find out what's driving the demand. Listen for the underlying interests, needs, fears, and concerns; that's where workable compromises are found.
05
Takeaway
Build Your Network Before You Need It
Product Managers depend on influence, and influence depends on relationships. Build genuine connections across teams and with key organizational influencers early, rather than suddenly looking for allies when you need support for an initiative.
06
Takeaway
Turn Politics Into Partnerships
The goal isn't to become better at playing political games. It's to understand people's motivations, communicate openly, build mutually beneficial relationships, and use your influence to move people toward shared customer and company outcomes.

Ashley Degianelli
-Mentor-
I have often found that a difficult stakeholder may challenge my work not because they want to, but simply because we are trying to accomplish different goals without even being aware of it.
We Product Managers must lead through influence more often than not and leverage that influence to get the most critical work done for our users first and foremost.
Give everyone you work with the benefit of the doubt. Let’s assume good intent.
Because our work as Product Managers is not only about knowing our goals but also about sharing those goals.
One of the most dangerous things we can do is assume that our stakeholders understand what we are trying to accomplish. It’s as bad for our careers as it is for our products.
In healthy organizations, these goals are widely communicated and understood. Reiterating your goal is a worthwhile endeavor no matter what.
But it’s not only about the goal itself. We should also share the “why” behind the goal, as it’s our fundamental role in an organization.
We are hired to be a voice of reason as well as inspiration.
